Wash with less energy consumption?

High-need appliances, high energy consumption

The appliances you use every day in the household increase your energy bill. Think about your washer, dryer or dishwasher. These appliances are certainly necessities, because clean clothes and dishes is nice for everyone. But unfortunately, they also demand a lot of energy consumption. In this blog, we take a closer look at the energy consumption of a washing machine: how much does a washing machine actually consume? And how can you reduce it?

These factors determine the energy consumption of your washing machine

  • How much your washing machine consumes depends on a number of factors:
  • The size of the drum: the larger the drum, the more energy is needed to fill the entire drum.
  • The program used: the longer and hotter the program, the more energy is needed.
  • The temperature of the water: the hotter the water, the more energy is needed to heat the water.
  • The energy label of the washing machine: the higher the energy label, the more economical the washing machine is.

The energy consumption of a washing machine

The eco program (40-60 degrees) is the most economical program of any washing machine. This mode is therefore used to calculate the average power consumption per wash of an average energy-efficient washing machine. The average is 0.55 kWh, but do you have a very old washing machine? Then the average for you could be 0.88 kWh.

To know the exact power consumption per wash of your washing machine, you can find it on the energy label: it tells you how many kWh your washing machine uses per 100 washes. But beware! If you wash at a higher temperature than the eco program, your power consumption will also increase.

This is how to reduce the power consumption of a washing machine

Of course, there are a number of ways to reduce the power consumption of your washing machine: this is how you can use as little energy as possible with your washing machine. Here are some tips:

  • Run a wash only when it is really necessary. It may sound obvious, but it's not bad to have a mountain of laundry. This way you can clean everything in one spin: spin a full drum.
  • Wash at a lower temperature: washing at a lower temperature requires less electricity. So you save energy and money. For example, choose a 30-degree program instead of 40 degrees.
  • Clean your washing machine. A dirty washing machine uses more energy. So make sure your washing machine is clean.
  • Don't use the pre-wash function. The pre-wash function uses extra water and energy: so use it only when really necessary.
  • Hang the laundry. Use your dryer as little as possible, you will see that this saves a lot. If the weather permits, you can also dry your laundry outside, which is a lot faster.
  • Use the eco mode. Many washing machines have an eco mode. This mode uses less energy but takes longer. So use it if you have the time.
  • Dose your detergent: too much detergent increases the power consumption of your washing machine.

Soap in washing machine

Is it high time for a new washing machine? Then always choose a washing machine with a high energy label, preferably energy label A. These washing machines may be a bit more expensive, but you will definitely earn that back in the long run. These washing machines are much more energy efficient.

Recycle your old washing machine

Selling a very old washing machine second-hand or taking it to a recycling center may sound sustainable, but it is not. This is because these washing machines use so much energy that they remain bad for the environment, even when they get a new owner. It's better to turn them in for recycling, which is better for the environment.

Return your old washing machine to the store where you buy your new one, or bring your old washing machine to the municipal waste collection point: you don't have to pay extra for this. In both cases, the materials are reused and processed in an environmentally friendly way.

Buy your energy-efficient washing machine online
